German is your biggest advantage

You need the A1 certificate for the visa, for example from the Goethe-Institut in your country. It must not be older than one year. If you learn more German before you travel, you find a family more easily and settle in faster.

Sicherheit, die. safetyYou are not alone in Germany

  • You know the terms beforehand.

We talk with you about what the placement costs and which terms apply in our first talk.

  • We know your host family.

Every family fills in a questionnaire, sends photos and talks to us before you meet them.

  • You have one contact person.

She is available around the clock and speaks to you in your language when needed.

  • We help when things get difficult.

If there are problems, we mediate between you and the family. If necessary, we look for a new family for you.

  • You meet other au pairs.

On arrival you get a welcome pack with contacts to other au pairs.

Fragen, die. questionsQuestions applicants often ask

Do I have to pay the agency?

We talk about that with you in our first talk. There you learn the costs and all terms of the placement.

How much is an au pair paid in Germany?

€280 pocket money a month. It is not a salary. Your host family pays for your room, meals and insurance, plus €70 a month for the language course.

Which German level do I need and where can I take the A1 exam?

You need at least level A1 and a recognised certificate that is no older than one year. You can take the exam at a Goethe-Institut, for example in Dakar or Abidjan. More German is an advantage.

Where do I apply for the visa and what does it cost?

At the German embassy responsible for your country. If you live in Gambia, that is the embassy in Dakar, in Côte d’Ivoire the embassy in Abidjan, where you also need the baccalauréat. The fee at both embassies is 50,000 FCFA (as of October 2026). For other countries we tell you the right embassy in our talk.

Who pays for the journey to Germany?

As a rule you pay for the journey there and back yourself. We talk about it with you in our call.

How old can I be?

Between 18 and 26. You must not have turned 27 when you apply for the visa.

Can I change my host family if there is a problem?

Talk to us first. We mediate between you and the family. If there is no solution, we look for a new host family for you.

Can men apply too?

Yes. We place women and men. Married people can also become au pairs.

Entlastung, die. reliefYour au pair is there when daycare, school and work do not fit together

For example when

  • your child is ill and cannot go to daycare or school,
  • you have an appointment at short notice,
  • you are stuck in traffic on the way home,
  • the school holidays start and you cannot take time off.

An au pair lives with you for up to one year, becomes part of the family and brings their language and culture to your dinner table.

Fragen, die. questionsQuestions host families often ask

What does an au pair cost per month?

About €389: €280 pocket money, €70 towards the language course and around €39 for insurance. On top of that come room, meals and travel costs to the language course. We tell you the one-off placement fee in the first call.

How long does it take until the au pair arrives?

That depends mainly on the visa and differs from country to country. The German Embassy in Dakar, for example, often states five to six weeks or longer once the application is complete, the embassy in Abidjan at least four weeks. The waiting time for an appointment comes on top. These are statements by the embassies from October 2026, not guarantees.

What happens if the visa is refused?

Then there are no additional costs for you. So far over 95 % of our au pairs’ visa applications have been approved.

How many hours can an au pair help and what are the tasks?

No more than 6 hours a day and 30 hours a week, babysitting included. Tasks are childcare and light housework, for example taking children to school and picking them up, playing with them and preparing meals. Nursing care for sick or elderly people is not part of it.

What if it does not work out day to day?

You and your au pair can talk to us at any time and we mediate between both sides. If a problem cannot be solved, we take care of a new placement and suggest another au pair if you wish.

Can we host an au pair from a parent’s country of origin?

Only if German is spoken as a native language in your home. If German is your family language but not your native language, the au pair must not come from a home country of the host parents. The embassy in Abidjan reads the rule more strictly: no family member may hold the nationality of the au pair’s country. We check this with you in the first call.

How well does an au pair speak German?

Basic German at level A1 with a certificate is required for the visa. Many applicants keep learning before they travel, and in Germany they attend a language course.

Can single parents host an au pair?

Yes. The condition is that at least one child under 18 lives with you.

GMG-Aupair Agentur is run by Grace Marielle Gouanou. We are based in Witten, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
